"Spider Silk: Is it all it’s made out to be in the movies?" is a module designed and developed by Karen Hinkley (Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, and GEMSEC, Dept. of Materials Science, University of Washington). Through an exploration of spider silk using the vehicle of the recent "Spiderman" movies, the unit:
• Introduces the engineering concept of tensile strength
• Provides students with the opportunity to use metric conversions in a useful way
• Stimulates students to develop their critical thinking skills
• Introduces students to biomimetics and give examples of real world applications
• Provides students with an opportunity to use basic physics concepts of kinetic energy, work and force on a real world problem
