Growth and Phase Transformations in Binary Colloidal Lattices

Intellectual
Merit:
We
developed a colloid-
scale model for
detailed
investigations
of crystal growth
kinetics and strain-induced
transformations
in 2-D alloys. At small tilt external
field tilt angles,
the domains experience magnetostrictive
compression.  At large tilt angles, the
crystal domains undergo
diffusionless
martensitic transformation from isotropic square phase to the strongly
anisotropic striped phase.  We are
studying the reversibility of this mechanism, which has ramifications for
understanding similar mechanisms in shape memory alloys and other phase change
materials.
